Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit

Education Workshops

The Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit promotes education to patients, family/whanau, care providers and health professionals in several ways:


Spinal 101

A weekly education programme is used to convey knowledge and understanding to the patient and their families so that they are able to:

  • participate in decisions about their care

  • develop ways to adapt to the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) physically and psychologically

  • improve or maintain their general health and well being

Some of the topics are:

  • Anatomy

  • Skin care

  • Discharge planning

  • Medical complications

  • Health and well being

  • Sex and intimacy following Spinal Cord Injury

  • Bowel and bladder management

Spinal Workshops

2 Day Comprehensive Spinal Workshop - held every two years. Auckland Spinal Unit’s vision is to promote best practice and provide ongoing education to Community Providers and Health Professional working in the field of Spinal Cord Injury.

The workshop begins with a symposium which covers all aspects of spinal cord injury including medical complications and Dysreflexia management.

The interdisciplinary team comprising of Doctors, Counsellor, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social Workers and Nursing give presentations starting from the acute management needs.  A comprehensive overview is given of the processes in place to rehabilitate spinal cord injured clients for them to regain their independence, and to return to living with a Spinal Cord Injury.

Sex & Intimacy & Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Workshops

Sex & Intimacy & SCI Workshop (For SCI Clients & Partners)

TASC and Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit invite clients and partners to an informative evening to discuss topics surrounding sex, intimacy and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI).  The workshop includes a presentation sharing experiences from people who have a SCI and/or their partners plus an opportunity to ask questions and gather resources.

Sex & Intimacy & SCI Workshop (For Health Professionals)

The aim of this workshop is to increase your knowledge and skills about sex, intimacy and SCI so you are comfortable and competent to address this in a manner that is appropriate for your specific profession/role.
